CRYSTAL LAKE – Kimo Williams stood Saturday night on the stage of Raue Center for the Arts, looking out on an empty theater shortly before his band’s sold-out performance.

It was a night where something mattered as much as the music.

“We’re here to support an organization trying to make a difference in the lives of people,’’ said Williams, a founding member of The Lt. Dan Band.

The Lt. Dan Band held a benefit concert with proceeds going to the Public Action to Deliver Shelter of McHenry County.

PADS is a charitable nonprofit organization with a mission to provide emergency, transitional and preventative measures for homeless individuals and families of McHenry County.

Demand for PADS services has increased dramatically this year as more and more people are out of work.

“We are all one event away from being homeless,’’ said Debbie DeGraw, PADS marketing and development director. “The way the economy is going is it doesn’t take much to push someone over the edge.’’

The show kicked off with a testimonial by former PADS client Ted Miller, who gives back by volunteering his services to the organization that gave to him.

“If it wasn’t for the PADS program, I wouldn’t be at where I am at today, in a stable environment and a job,’’ said Miller, who is employed as a truck driver.

The past fiscal year, PADS served 220 people in its emergency church shelters. DeGraw said the numbers were increasing 80 people more than last year.

“You don’t think it is happening in McHenry County,’’ said Kevin Goers, concert-goer and longtime PADS supporter. “It’s amazing to me.’’

“I love supporting good causes,’’ said Gary Sinise before the show.

Sinise, whose long list of acting credits include his portrayal of Lt. Dan in the Oscar-winning film “Forrest Gump,’’ is starring as Detective Mack “Mac” Taylor in CBS’s “CSI: New York.’’

The cover band began entertaining troops in 2004 overseas and will embark on another two-week USO tour this summer.

“We do a lot of benefits,’’ Sinise said. “It’s nice that they [PADS] asked us.’’

“The essence of any organization is the passion that drives them,’’ Williams said. “Supporting an organization trying to make a difference in the lives of people is truly being citizens.”

All proceeds from this benefit concert will be used to provide emergency and transitional shelter and supportive services for homeless men, women and children of McHenry County.

Sponsors as of 12/19/08: Sage Products, Inc., 1st Midwest Bank, ServicePrinting, Mailways, Crystal Lake Bank & Trust, Gloria Jensen Agent-First Prudential Realty, Home State Bank, TWOS Sales-St. Joseph Home Sale Practice, Spring Grove Hose Show, Advocate Good Shepard Health Care

Senior Girl Scout Troop #325 wanted to help local agencies in the spring when most donation are few. The scouts decided to stand in front of Jewel on Sunday, May 17 & hand out needs lists (they researched from Web sites or agency contacts). They gave the lists to customers as they entered the store - hoping for 1 or more items to be donated as they exited. The response was wonderful. Some customers went home & brought back more items to donate. Gift cards, coupons, & money was also donated by customers. The scouts collected items for: PADS, Helping Paws, Turning Point, & Woodstock Food Pantry.

This service project helped the scouts complete their Journey Award. Even with their busy Middle & High School schedules (St. Mary, Northwood, Harrison, WNHS, & home school), the scouts are very dedicated to helping the Woodstock area: 2 scouts are working on their Silver Award & 3 scouts are currently working on their Gold Award.

We would recommend this as a very effective service project idea for any group wanting to help out. Jewel was very supportive.
